It is important to note that without good formal education citizens will not understand and participate in national and global policy formation. The Millennium Development Goals will not be achieved by the targeted 2015 if an intentional decision is made to engage civil society more especially the rural folks to fully participate in nation and global policy making. For many rural youth and children to be less engaged in formal education calls rings an alarm.

The Otopeasi Village in Ghana has deficiencies in their Education. The village has school buildings but the classrooms are empty. There are teachers but the villagers fail to attend school. Those who attend the schools also do not come back after they fail their English and Mathematics exams and about 75% of them did not perform well in their final year exams organized by the West African Examination Council because of this they do not have admission in the Senior High Schools.

Teaming up with teachers we will be launching a learning campaign to raise awareness of the need for the youth and children to be in school and not quit when they fail in Mathematics and Science. Youth and Children will form reading, science and mathematics clubs in their schools. These clubs will meet thrice every week after school to read selected books and also be taught how to use the dictionary. This will help improve their reading skills, mathematics and science knowledge. They will be taught these subjects in a simple and easy way. This will help them understand and love these subjects better and embrace the future with boldness so as to fit into the society.

Our objectives is that these after schools clubs will seek to reduce the failure rate 15 percent and increase school attendance by 35 percent by boosting the self esteem of these youth and children. Also parents will be asked through the Chief of this Village to allow their girl child to go to school. These we anticipate will increase the girl child attendance to school by 6% as to 1.8% at the moment. The lessons taught at the clubs will be a compliment of the schools educational curriculum. This is to make sure there is an increase in the percent of number of student who pass the West African Examination Council exams to enter Senior High School by 8% each year.

The youth and children love story telling and drama so we are going to organize some drama, singing and story telling which is called “ananse sem”. This will be done at night for two days. Since there is no electricity in the Otopeasi village we will take a power generator along and this will draw the village folks to us. These drama and “ananse sem” content will be on the importance of education.
We will provide free educational materials (pens, pencils, exercise books, story books, and school bags) distributed to the schools. Since this commitment is going to be done with the help of the teachers we will ask them to keep records of the participants because an award will be given to the best and regular attendants.

Funds will be raised from individual students and also letters will be written to organizations who deal in stationeries, educational materials and also some philanthropist will be contacted help fund the project. Articles will be published in some newspapers to inform the general public and potential donors for the commitment can be sustain over a period of 4years.

How can we sell Education to

How can we sell Education to the children and youth? Is it a worthwhile product? Will it help them to improve their everyday lives?
How about the envelope? And which are the advantages of attending school? Do the buildings have air-conditioning? Are they beautiful at all? Do they have flowers and gardens or trees where below to rummage for the sweet bite together? Do you know at all whether their parents need their help at school time or any employer illegally employs them paying for their job a sum which could be not so much as fair would dictate but enough so as to make their failing at school attractive and productive? If I was in your case I would check all these things before quitting but, let me tell you something...I wouldn't, neither three times nor twice a week, I wouldn't at all steal them their leisure time before putting aside whether it is or it is not a matter of existencial or social needs on the first part, and motivation, on the second.

Hi Michael, Thank you a lot

Hi Michael,
Thank you a lot for you comment to this commitment. I believe you have asked some important questions but missed the mark somehow.
I must say that these kids and youth are not being used by any employer who pays their parents to use the services of these young ones. It is a two way problem here. The parents do not see the reason why their wards should go to school when the farms are there for them. This is because income levels are low. Problem here is that 80% of this poverty level CAN be done away with through educating the young ones and their parents so the cycle of illiteracy and poverty can be broken. How do innovations come about? It will be ridiculous for someone to pay for these young ones to fail their exams.
The second is self esteem- failure should not be a platform for quitting rather a spring board for excellence. The fact that these young ones fail in exams does not guarantee them the luxury to jeopardize their future.
Imagine a generation that cannot read, write and understand National and Global Policies. Imagine getting sick and not able to read instructions on medications, imagine you not able to write and communicate meaningfully would you have been able to comment on my commitment? This should sadden your heart and have empathy for these young ones who are THE legacy this generation is living behind.
I believe it will be worth to note that I did not just sit in my comfort zone and came up with this commitment but spent time with the village folks to assess the problem and came out with this possible solution.
Thank you my brother once again.
